However, winter conditions in Spiti can be harsh, with temperatures dropping as low as -30°C, road closures due to heavy snow, and limited access to basic services.
- Road Accessibility: The Shimla route is generally the only way to access Spiti in winter, as the Manali route via Rohtang and Kunzum passes is closed due to heavy snowfall.
- Extreme Cold: Temperatures can plummet dramatically, so carry heavy winter gear, including thermal layers, high-quality jackets, gloves, and insulated boots.
- Accommodation: Only a few homestays and guesthouses remain open in winter
- Power and Water Shortages: Frequent power cuts and frozen water supply are common in winter. Carry power banks and water bottles.
- Health & Acclimatization: The altitude combined with harsh weather can lead to altitude sickness and other health issues. Acclimatize properly and carry essential medications along with portable oxygen if needed.
- Limited Connectivity: Mobile network and internet connectivity are scarce. Be prepared for communication challenges and inform someone of your itinerary beforehand.
